A ONCE IN A LIFETIME TRIP, READY TO REPEAT

As you might have seen by now on my socials, I’m collaborating with Untamed Africa Tours on a custom tour in Namibia from July 5 to 15 in 2025. The country has left such an impression on me, that I now want to share that with other riders as well. And what better way to do that than with a custom made tour including all of the most beautiful locations! Continue reading for some background information, frequently asked questions and how to sign up for this adventurous tour where you ride on a Yamaha Ténéré 700!

While working on events for Peak Design throughout Europe, I meet lots of like minded motorcycle riders and creatives. On the MaxlRIDE event in Germany, I’ve had the pleasure to meet many new faces, of which some now even became friends. One of those meetings was with Dirkie and his good friend Ulf from Untamed Africa Tours, based in Namibia. They visited me on the stand to ask about the Peak Design phone mounts and we ended up talking about our professions. “So, what is it that you do?” Dirkie eventually asked, and when it became clear to them I was a photographer, he jokingly said he could use one to start promoting his new tour with Ténéré’s. Flabbergasted, but excited I told him: “Hey, let’s talk!”

and before you know it…

…you’re in Namibia two months later creating content of two Yamaha Ténéré’s. Riding in the most incredible landscapes for marketing purposes to eventually promote the Adventure Tours Untamed is launching for 2025. And with my visit there Dirkie came up with an idea: “What if, we create an Untamed x LNR collab tour where riders can join on an adventure, receive like a nice goodie bag, get photographed on tour by you and have the adventure of a lifetime?”. We brainstormed throughout the trip from that point and agreed on a few possible dates for 2025. We can now proudly say, we’ve finalized these details. If you are interested and aren’t occupied July 5 to 15, please continue reading!

We’ve tried our best to put all the information about the Untamed Africa Tours x LNR Moto tour below. With a tour like this, many questions can arise, which we completely understand. Combining frequently asked questions about the original Untamed tours together with the ones that might pop up with this specific collab tour, we hope to inform you accordingly. Missing some answers after reading this FAQ? Don’t hesitate to contact Dirkie or me personally through the contact form at the top and bottom of this page with any remaining questions. Let’s get you informed of what’s to come!

BUT FIRST: A GENERAL IMPRESSION OF WHAT’S AWAITING YOU

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PRACTICAL STUFF AHEAD

HOW MANY SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE?

For this tour from July 5 to July 15 (also your arrival/departure date) we take a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10 riders with us. This to provide personal contact and maintain quality throughout the entire tour. Make sure to fill in the contact form straight away if you have already decided you want to join us. The registrations are processed in chronological order and per paid booking. If you’d like to join with one or multiple befriended riders, please make sure to include this in your message when filling out the contact form. We can’t promise anything, but of course we will do our utmost best to keep friends together. If there is more interest than available spots, we will look into the possibilities for a second tour (for now this will probably be early august).

WHAT’S THE PRICE AND INCLUSIONS?

The price for this tour is N$91037 (Namibian Dollars) per person. Please keep current exchange rates in mind! This includes the following:

  • The full use of one of Untamed’s Yamaha Ténéré 700’s
  • All fuel consumed by your bike is paid for
  • All your accommodation is taken care of during the tour
  • With the exception of the meals on the first and last evening of the tour, all meals are included
  • Content created by Leonoor that you can use afterwards on your social media channels, photobooks and more
  • Untamed’s well equipped support truck is with us at all times
  • All transfers to and from your arrival and departure points in Walvis Bay.
  • Any required permits or entrance fees for national parks, game drives and cultural visits
  • It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: Dirkie and Leonoor will accompany you all the way. Dirkie is your guide and able to offer tuition and advice and Leonoor documents the tour for you to look back on later

ARE THERE ANY EXCLUSIONS?

Not much, but there are some:

  • You must arrange your own insurance policy for this tour
  • You are responsible for all flights to and from Walvis Bay. If you decide to fly in on Windhoek International Airport, the transfer costs are at your own expense
  • You are required to bring your own riding gear
  • Any drinks that are not included with meals are for your own account

In the questions below we clarify some of these points.

WHICH AIRPORT AM I FLYING TO/FROM?

You fly on Walvis Bay International Airport. Arrival should be on July 5th and departure July 15th. Of course you are more than welcome to arrive earlier and depart later, but then we won’t be able to offer transfers from this airport. It’s only a 15-minute drive from your hotel, Untamed’s offices and workshop and airport transfers from Walvis Bay to your hotel are included. In contrast, Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek is a 6-hour drive away. Flying there would also mean losing valuable travel time, essentially two days. If you do decide to fly to Windhoek, we can not cover your transfer.

A little inside tip: We’ve noticed there’s often a difference in booking directly with an airline or through a so called ‘flight comparison website’. The latter is great for checking options, but often lacks certain services and is, as it turns out, often much more expensive. A service that was included in Leonoor’s booking directly through British Airways, was that she did NOT have to recollect the checked in 23kg bag after every flight. It was checked in all the way through and BA just transferred it to the correct terminal every flight.

DO I NEED A CERTAIN MOTORCYCLE LICENSE?

It’s a strict requirement that you have a valid motorcycle license in your home country that allows you to ride the capacity of the bike that you will be riding on this tour, the Yamaha Ténéré 700. Not only is it important for legal reasons, but it is also a requirement of your travel insurance company.

If your driving license is written in English, you won’t need an international driving permit – your driving license is all that’s required. If your driving license is not written in English, you will need to obtain an international driving permit. These are easy and cheap to obtain in your home country. Likely, this will also be a requirement of your travel insurance company. Countries frequently change their policies on this kind of thing, so we advise you to contact the foreign office in your home country for the latest advice.

DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

As with any foreign travel, proper insurance from a reputable company is a good move. Untamed Africa Tours insists that all riders have appropriate travel insurance in place. The policy you choose needs to cover you for riding motorcycles and, importantly, for riding the capacity of the bike that you will ride on this tour. You are welcome to have a look at Europe Assistance health insurance as it is directly linked to Life Link which is a local emergency services company.

WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY?

Dirkie will choose the best course of action depending on the situation. We carry medical equipment with us and can use the satellite messenger or satellite phone to contact our doctor/support vehicle/office. Untamed will assist from the office, where they can see our exact location from the GPS tracker and they’ll have the details of your travel insurance company. There will be a medical team on standby who is informed of our tour and the areas we ride in. It is a must that you have good travel insurance and medical aid. We will have all your information on hand so that should something happen to you, we can handle the situation in the best and quickest way possible.

CAN I CANCEL MY BOOKING?

We have a cancellation policy in effect. Info will folow shortly.

THE RIDING

HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?

Namibia has a large variety of terrain. The routes are 80% on main gravel roads, which can change from very good to some bad sections. Most important thing here is that you’re honest with yourself if you think you have the skills it takes to ride in these conditions. We will be literally in the middle of nowhere, and mistakes can have bad results, which we do not want. With all this said, this is not to discourage you from joining but to prepare you so that you can get the most out of the tour.

WHAT TERRAIN WILL WE ENCOUNTER?

The roads can be in very good condition, but we will encounter some corrugation and some soft/sandy patches. Tight twisting mountain passes, dust or fog is not uncommon and it will change constantly during the tour. Wildlife or local livestock is something you will encounter on the road, but Dirkie will make sure everyone is briefed on all different terrain types and provide rider tips and assistance where it’s needed. Needless to say, it’s not just about your ability to ride here. It’s as much about your attitude towards the situations we may encounter.

WHAT IF I’M UNCERTAIN OF MY SKILL SET?

It will be demanding, and there are no shortcuts or easy ways around most of the routes on tour. Your safety is our main concern, and one of the ways to keep you happy and safe is if you have the required skill set to tackle these terrains with confidence. Dirkie as your guide, will have the right to load your bike on the trailer if he feels that your safety is at risk. We will assess every situation to make sure that everyone is safe. The best tour is where no one gets hurt. If you are uncertain please don’t hesitate to ask and we will arrange a call with Dirkie to discuss your required skill set for the tour.

NAMIBIA ITSELF

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?

Namibia’s diverse climate offers unique riding experiences throughout the year. During the dry winter months from May to September, temperatures range from cool 15°C (59°F) mornings to pleasant 25-35°C (77-95°F) afternoons, making it ideal for comfortable, long distance rides and this collab tour in particular.

ARE THESE ADVENTURES SAFE?

Safety is our first concern. The first question that I (Leonoor) asked myself before traveling down to Namibia was “Is riding safe there?”. And after my own experiences during those two weeks on the job I can confirm I’ve never felt more safe and welcomed in any other country. For all other safety concerns, we have everything with us on tour. The guides have an up-to-date medical aid certificate. We have satellite phones, GPS trackers, and experienced support teams. But it’s important to recognize that this is a dangerous sport, and you are still the one behind the handlebar determining your capabilities. We’re riding through towns and villages, remote desert areas, and challenging weather. We do our utmost best to make sure that everyone is as safe as can be by giving rider assistance and advice where it is needed.

We take safety seriously, and we require everyone who rides with us to have adequate personal travel insurance and to inform their medical aid.

WILL I SEE DIFFERENT PARTS OF NAMIBIA?

Even though we only ride through the northern part of Namibia, we have managed to create an inclusive route in which you will encounter the many different faces of the country. From the almost deserted and extremely vast coastal areas, the lush greenery and waterfalls in the north, to the extremely dry plains, cultural experiences and the wild animals in Etosha National Park. When you want to explore more after riding with us, we are happy to provide you with tour details to explore Namibia further with Untamed Africa Tours.

DURING THE TOUR

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMODATION IS ARRANGED?

You as a rider will not have any job besides riding and enjoying the tour. Each night’s accommodation is carefully selected to give you a completely different experience from the night before. All the lodges and hotels are 3 or 4 stars. Namibia is famous for its hospitality and friendly faces. Most of the accommodations are in very remote areas making it all even more unique and chances of spotting wildlife nearby increase. Next to these incredible hotels and lodges, we include a night of camping at Ongongo Waterfall Campsite.

WHAT IS THE ITINERARY?

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all the riders, please be aware that the tour itinerary is subject to change based on factors such as weather conditions, availability, and seasonal considerations. We put together a custom itinerary to explore the most beautiful areas in the Northern part of Namibia. We’ll share the full itinerary later, but to give you an idea: cultural experiences in Himba and Bushman villages, a visit to Etosha National Park, landscapes ranging from oases to vast and endless coastal roads, historic villages and wildlife encounters in the arid plains.

IS THERE A SUPPORT TRUCK?

Yes, this tour is supported by Untamed’s 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser carrying your luggage, all the spare parts and special tools.

YOUR OWN GEAR

WHAT RIDING GEAR SHOULD I WEAR?

We strive for everyone to have a safe ride, so we advise the items below:

  • Good quality ADV or motocross helmet
  • ADV style or motocross trousers
  • ADV or motocross boots
  • Body armor (preferably one that is not too warm)
  • Gloves made of good quality, blistered palms are no fun
  • A buff to protect your neck from the sun
  • A lightweight pullover for when temperatures drop at the coast
  • A set of clear and tinted lenses: clear for foggy conditions and tinted for the desert
  • IMPORTANT: A camelback is a must. The downfall of many riders is dehydration on long desert tours

AND WHAT ABOUT MY OTHER CLOTHING?

Not much is used plus there’s always a quick wash option. Due to the high dryness and temperatures, the garment is dry in 20 minutes. It differs per person what you need and bring with you, but to give you an idea:

  • Shorts and T-shirts
  • Underwear
  • Solid shoes
  • Flip-Flops
  • Swimwear
  • Warm jacket (a cool breeze can blow in the evening)
  • Trousers for cooler evenings
  • Some pairs of riding socks

ANY PERSONAL ITEMS I MUST NOT FORGET?

The following things have proven themselves to be quite necessary:

  • You’ll catch lots of sun – so sun lotion, a sun hat/cap and sunglasses
  • Personal medication like anti-inflammatories, tummy issues, pain, eye drops, muscle patches, band-aids, lip balm, etc
  • Flashlight/headlamp
  • Chargers for your electronic devices

DO I CARRY MY OWN LUGGAGE ON THE BIKE?

No, only your essentials. Each motorcycle will be kitted out with a Mosko Moto tank bag for smaller items you want to carry with you. We suggest that you use a backpack/camelback where you can carry any additional items that don’t fit in your tank bag. Every rider will get an ammo box where you will pack the clothing for the duration of the tour. Your main travel bag will be safely stored at the end destination.
